Alexander Crummell Fully Funded PhD Scholarships 2025
for Students with Black or Black-Mixed Ethnicity
In collaboration with Queens’ College, Cambridge, the School of Biological Sciences is inviting applications for the Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarships.
Eligibility
These scholarships are aimed at Home (UK fee rate) students with Black or Black-Mixed ethnicity, applying for a PhD degree in a science-based subject at the University of Cambridge. The terms of the award include that you will become a member of Queens’ College, Cambridge.
The Award
A maintenance award for 4 years at the UKRI level (£19,237 in 2024); university fees at the home rate; research consumables for 4 years (£18,000 in total).
You will also undertake a 3- month long Professional Internship for PhD students (PIPS) at some stage during your study, and will participate in training and cohort-building events alongside other funded students.

Option 1
Contact (by email) potential supervisors in labs based in one of our departments, institutes or research centres to discuss the possibility of applying to carry out PhD research under their supervision. Potential supervisors will help you with formulating a suitable research project proposal for your application. You will also be able to find potential supervisors listed under the six major Research Themes which exist within the School of Biological Sciences:

- Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour
- Functional and Evolutionary Genomics
- Reproduction, Development and Lifelong Health
- Organisms, Evolution and Ecology
Option 2
Eligible applicants who would prefer to undertake lab rotations before selecting a PhD project should apply to the The Cambridge Biosciences DTP four year PhD programme. Successful applicants to this programme who meet the criteria for the Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarship may be offered a co-funded scholarship.
Application Deadlines:
- 3 December 2024 (if applying for the Cambridge Biosciences DTP 4-year PhD programme); or
- 7 January 2025 if applying direct to a Department.
